On Saturday, 17th April,2010, Bandon Tidy Town volunteers took to the streets to clean up the vast amount of litter that has piled up lately. Over 100 bags of litter were collected within the 60km zone. We would urge all towns people to help us keep this town clean by using the bins. Most of the litter that we collected was recyclable.

Tidy town volunteers took to the streets of Bandon last evening (13th April 2010) and collected litter from St Patrick’s Quay, Ballymodan Place, the entrance to the Supervalu Shopping centre and along Chapel Street as far as the Poachers Inn. A total of 16 sacks of litter were filled which is a huge number of bags considering that these areas are in the town centre. We continue to beg people to put all litter in the bins around town.

As part of the National Spring Clean event, Bandon volunteers will be involved in a community spring clean on Saturday, 17th April, 2010. We hope to inspire as many people as possible to join us for an hour or two. Bandon Tidy Town volunteers have already cleared litter from the Bandon By pass, The Old Cork Road and from the shrubbery outside the Thornfields Estate.

Approaches to Bandon Business Owners

Bandon Tidy Town volunteers and the Bandon Working Together group has teamed up to make a concerted effort to brighten up the town following the severe flooding on 19th November. We have lined up volunteers to help with painting jobs and litter removal.

A number of premises look very neglected in part due to the flooding but also due to the severe economic downturn. We have started talking directly to business owners to see if we can help to smarten up the town. So far the response has been favourable but we have many more businesses and individuals to chat with.

Dead heading the Hydrangeas

We spent our first evening this season dead heading the hydrangeas planted on the approach road into the town. These hydrangeas were all grown from cuttings many years ago and each year become more impressive as they mature.

Laragh National School receives its green flag

Bandon Tidy Town volunteers were invited to Laragh National School to celebrate their green flag award. The pupils have worked hard to achieve green flag status and should all be highly commended in their efforts. Brian Crowley, MEP was guest of honour at the ceremony.

Last month Bandon Tidy Town volunteers took part in the annual St Patricks day parade. Whilst not as sunny as last year, the rain held off and a good time was had by all.

Diarmuid Gavin and a Bandon Community Garden Challenge

We hope to inspire Diarmuid Gavin to design a community garden for the towns people of Bandon. The Glasslinn Circus Field site is somewhat of a challenge. It runs between the river and the main road into the town and right now is just a flat field with a few trees along the perimeter. The council have started work on a river walk which runs behind Kellehers and will emerge in the community garden.

Our task is to come up with an inspiring brief for Diarmuid. The active retired group will be incorporating fitness equipment in part of the garden and the town councillors will be installing a multi use games area (MUGA) at the far end of the site. Towns people have been coming up with lots of exciting ideas so please keep sending these to us.
